Was there actually a recall or something for this? How did everyone find out that there was a replacement axle? Is it a matter of only those who complain get this fixed, or did Deere notify owners of a problem?In having the axle replaced, did the dealer cover getting the tractor to the dealership and the repairs, or did you folks who got the work done get socked for windshield time and transport?On warranty work in general, in your experience, do you have to pay to have the service guy come out or to have the tractor taken in for warranted repairs? Do these policies vary dealer-to-dealer? Thanks for the feedback. We are new to the tractor game and even newer to the tractor-repair game....

I found out about he problem from this board -- although I had noticed the tractor tearing up my pasture on turns. My situation, from what I can gather from others here is very unusual, in that my dealer and John Deere worked out a deal to give me a new tractor (2000 vs 1999 with 150 hrs.)instead of replacing the axle. The dealer picked up the old, switched the loader, and delivered the new in two days! Needless to say I can't say enough good about Deere, AND MY DEALER!
Specifically to your questions, I don't think Deere has a "recall" -- you have to go to your dealer for satisfaction/service, and that seems to vary around the country. If you don't get satisfaction from your dealer, go to JD directly.
Again, in my situation, the dealer comes to my (small) farm for any service- warranty or no. (Usually when he's in the area -- I live in a small community, and a lot of farms, and "farmettes", and more recently, developments -- but a lot of farm tractors, compacts, and mowers, so he's active.)
I'm sure others will respond, but it seems the dealer is the key to success and or disappointment. Good luck! ....

Hi,
If you look at John Deere's warranty, it states that it is the responsibility of the customer to get the tractor to the dealer for warranty service. Some dealers will absorb this cost. Some won,t. It would be a good idea to ask your dealer what their policy is before you buy if this is important to you. On an actual safety recall(Product Improvement Program, as Deere calls them) Deere pays to have your unit picked up or for a service call to do the repair. Since the axle is not a safety related recall, technically it is your responsibility as the customer to pay for transport to the dealer, unless they have a different policy. I would have to say that most of the better dealers would have such a policy, at least through the first year of warranty. ....

looks like you got a lot of questions. I believe most of them are answered in the post, but in general JD never had a recall. They made up a kit for those that seemed to know the problem and had good dealers. The dealer has to get the kit for you and JD pays him so many hours to install. I installed my own kit. JD had Dana design the front end and they screwed up by eliminating the ackerman effect of turning. In short the outer wheel turning has to turn at a different radius. Kit includes the complete front end, new pump and steering control, pressure line. ....
